Non-Opioid & Non-Steroid
Trigger Point Injections
While most clinics rely on steroids and opioids as treatment options for almost any injury, Peak takes a much different approach.
We have a strong belief in the body’s natural ability to heal itself, if given the proper support, care, and treatment.
One common issue we see are trigger points – which are essentially very sensitive and painful patches that form in a muscle. If you have ever experienced a really sensitive spot that makes you wince or jump from pain when touched, then you know what a trigger point is.
Treatment options for trigger points can vary, but Trigger-Point Injections can be very effective in your treatment plan.
After a thorough examination to determine the exact area, trigger-point injections can be administered directly to the area and often yield great and lasting results.
What’s In The Injection?
Trigger-point injections are comprised of a 99% saline and 1% lidocaine solution. Often, the injection provides instant relief to most symptoms.
The products we use are some of the safest on the market and research has proven them to be more effective than more commonly used steroids. Injections are out-patient procedures, in most cases, lasting 15-20 minutes.
In most cases, patients can expect little to no pain and resume a normal daily regimen, while avoiding strenuous activity for a few weeks post treatment.

Trigger Point Injections F.A.Q.
What are trigger points?
The American Medical Association defines a trigger point as a “… hyperirritable spot found within a taught band of skeletal muscle or its fascia which when provocatively compressed causes local pain or tenderness as well as characteristic referred pain, tenderness and/or autonomic phenomena.” In layman’s terms, it is a very sensitive, painful patch that has formed in a muscle.
How did you know I had them?
Trigger points are easy to feel during an exam; most people have them. And they often coincide with pain complaints in the neck and upper, mid, and lower back. Have you ever felt a “knot” in a muscle? That’s a trigger point!
How did I get them?
Over-use, stress, injury … There are countless ways to develop and worsen them.
Are they permanent?
Nope! The common phrasing of a “knot” is actually a great way to think about them. If you don’t untie a knot, it’s still a knot – and can get even more tangled. But they can be undone. Same as with these trigger points. And while they’re not tangled, the tight and taut bands can feel that way. Hard and round, painful and hot.
What are you injecting into me?
We believe in responsible pain management here at Peak, so we will never use anything like steroids or opioids. We prefer safe and natural alternatives, like a 99% saline/1% lidocaine mix, Platelet Rich Plasma made from your own blood, or a regenerative medicine product made only from healthy umbilical cord cells, post-delivery.
Are there any side effects?
As with any medical procedure, there are some risks. The risk of infection is very small, as is the risk of bleeding after the injection. Most patients do not experience any side effects at all; however a small percentage may feel a pinpoint area of muscle soreness the day after the injection for a very short period of time. Please notify the medical provider if you are allergic to Marcaine (Bupavicaine), Lidocaine, or any medications that end in “caine”.
Are they safe? Are they effective?
The products we use are the safest ones on the market, and research has proven they’re actually more effective than the more commonly used steroids. While the saline/lidocaine injections are great for short-term relief, the PRP treatments have a longer lasting result, and the regenerative medicine products can have even longer lasting and sometimes permanent results.
How long do I have to wait to get back to my favorite activities?
Everyone is different, but as a precaution, we do prefer you hold off from overly strenuous activities for a few weeks in the area of treatment. You can do normal day-to-day activities with no delay.
